Coen first worked in business for 14 years. Since 2005 he has been a therapist with his own practice, especially for top management and specialists who are psychologically distressed.

Coen first worked in business for 14 years. Since 2005 he has been a therapist with his own practice, especially for top management and specialists who are psychologically distressed. Usually, people who have trust issues with their team, who struggle with aggression regulation, loneliness, drug abuse and attachment problems. He is also a master practitioner coach, counselor and trauma therapist (BEPP). He himself endured PTSD due to long-term trauma in his younger years. Since 2002, Coen also develops leadership and teams. He focusses in those programs on an intense holistic approach, where the combination is made between body and mind. The main themes in these development programs are (personal) leadership, team development and self-help.

What Coen notices about teams is that too often a shared culture with a strong mutual trust is missing. The social system suffers from pseudo harmony, conflict avoidance and social insecurity. This is in stark contrast to the team culture in special military units – the special forces – where strong mutual trust, ownership and granted power are more the rule than the exception. “I teach teams to create safety among themselves. That requires strong team leaders. And that also applies to the individual: He wants to grow in a healthy work-life balance. Woke, but growing hurts. After all, nothing grows in your comfort zone.”

Coen embraces the statement ‘Hard choices, easy life. Easy choices, hard life’ by Jerzy Gregorek. This vision is crucial for self-help, teamwork, and leadership. In the development programs of The Marine & De Therapist, trainees are therefore given the space to find growth in their own discomfort, to see beauty and thereby become a more assertive, healthier, and more loving person.

Gerben served in the elite seafaring unit of the Dutch Navy; the Marine Corps. He then studied at the Academy of Arts. These experiences give him a broad, deep, and astute view on people.

“I see what happens to people when they screw up mentally and physically and try to climb out of it. That plodding is a good sign of a healthy survival drive and is much better absorbed by a group than by yourself alone. Here sprouts the intrinsic motivation of an individual to give all they have, for themselves and others. I am working on that, because only there will be real growth.”

His motto is ‘tough love’, which stems from his conviction that if you want to excel and make a real connection at the same time, you can’t just sugarcoat your act and be nice. You have to be sincere. And interact multi-level with teammates. Alle the way, embracing it. Only then it is possible to love others – also on their dark sides – and accept or carry each other shortcomings. In doing so, team will go faster, will excel and progress with nothing to lose.

In 2008 Arjan joined the Marine Corps. After returning from his operational deployment, Operation Ocean Shield, he enlisted in the special units within the elite corps, Netherlands Maritime Special Operations Forces (NLMARSOF).

In 2008 Arjan joined the Marine Corps. After returning from his operational deployment, Operation Ocean Shield, in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean, he enlisted in the special units within the elite corps, Netherlands Maritime Special Operations Forces (NLMARSOF). Characteristics of this heavily trained tight knit special unit were integrity, acumen, dedication, and strength, deployed for the team and their mission. After completing anti-terror training, training as an NLMARSOF-operator and obtaining various airborne certificates, he mainly focused on counterterrorism and homeland security.

As a result of a serious injury, Arjan started to study the functioning of the human body. In addition to his work at the Ministry of Defense, he obtained his diploma as a physiotherapist. By now he also became deeply interested in the field of osteopathy, where the physical, emotional, and cognitive ability of man is seen as an integrated whole. It is a broader, holistic approach to the functioning and treatment of the human body, by restoring balance through manual techniques. In 2023 Arjan obtained his Master of Science in osteopathy.

Arjan is a cornerstone within the DMDT team where he can use his experiences as a former special forces’ operator and as a therapist. His focus is developing (senior management) trainees from corporations who pursue authentic leadership, excellent teamwork and a healthy belief and performance system. Arjan, D.O.
